China will suspends major tariffs on Canadian agricultural imports
China officially confirmed on Friday, February 27, 2026, that it will suspend several major tariffs on Canadian agricultural and seafood products starting March 1, 2026. reported Reuters.
The suspension includes the following specific measures:
Canola Meal and Peas: China will suspend the 100% tariffs previously imposed on these imports.
Seafood: Tariffs of 25% on Canadian lobster and crab imports will also be halted.
Duration: These suspensions are scheduled to remain in effect until the end of 2026.
But here's what's interesting...
The Trade Deal: This de-escalation follows an initial deal struck by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney during a visit to Beijing in January 2026. In exchange, Canada agreed to lower its own 100% tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles to a rate of 6.1% for up to 49,000 units per year.
Canola Seed Tariffs: Despite expectations that tariffs on canola seeds would be lowered to 15% (from the current 84%), China's latest statement notably made no mention of this change. However, an ongoing anti-dumping probe into Canadian canola is expected to conclude on March 9, 2026, which may lead to further announcements.
Omissions: The official statement also did not address tariffs on canola oil or pork, leaving their status unchanged for now.
Industry groups such as the Canola Council of Canada and Pulse Canada have welcomed the news as a major boost for farmers ahead of the 2026 growing season.
